Wednesday, bloggy Wednesday

I didn't work today so I achieved the long held ambition to visit The Island which you access via the raod that leads past Sandra's old place.  We'll call it Road Island because its crisscrossed with tracks leading to pump houses.  Above you can see a sand dredger on the Murray.

Steve dressed suitably boaty.

Cuppla old pump houses.  Not big on architectural style.

Whereas the Merbein Brickworks is begging to be made into dwellings.
I scrumped some pomegranates on the way home. Note that Steve mowed the lawn today - could have played petanque.
And here's some limes a workmate gave me and some olives which a client gave me - duly entered on the gift register at work, of course.  Mellow fruitfulness - nearly.

Personal

The woman beside the camera.
Don't shoot.

Yesterday, despite my no-carbs diet, we decided to have a hamburger for lunch.
All things in moderation, especially moderation.
Fortunately the shop is next door. Unfortunately the business has just been sold so I'll miss little treats like personalised hamburger bags,

and delicious hamburgers.
Sissy and Rose will miss their good mate, Harry.

But Jen will be able to return to her island home.
All this on the verge of entering the Age of Enlightenment and Elegance.

Port Elliot 2

This family seems to have a preoccupation with their feet.  I
have read its a Pisces trait.

Subtle reminders of absent friends.

The church garden was obviously loved and blackbirds had greeted me earlier in the morning.  Later in the day the gardener was present and happy to be photographed. Somewhat rudely I asked her to turn away from the camera so I could photo the parrot bag she had on her back.

A little difficult to see in these photos but rabbits abound in Port Elliot.
Of course, it may be seasonal...  Shrove Tuesday today I think.

This is a house which I love and have earmarked for a Cox family holiday.

Just to prove The Strand is not always deserted.  Most of my fellow tourists seem to be from China, Germany or Ireland.  The locals seem largely to be my vintage, earnestly riding bicycles to pick up the newspaper or walking dogs...  Fortunately there are also the surfers.

This is a miniature statice which is abundant but I have never noticed before.

While I was sitting quietly reading my book on that half circle bench in the previous post, strange creatures thundered up and down the steps.  Red, blue, yellow and green teams of some pursuasion (there's no escaping Jane Austen)  brought back traumatic memories of school sports.  The blues had decided to come as octopi.  I asked no questions.  Typical Freebairn.  Fairburn?  Firebrain?  Go Wellington!!!

I'm not sure if this accounted for the presence of Inspector Rex.  There were rumours of a mysterious ruddy burglar...

Here is my monastic room.  What you see is what you get - plus a wardrobe.

The sea air went to my head and I went on a spending spree.  The bookshop is always hard to resist in Port Elliot.  So civilised.  I went in for a cup of peppermint tea and 2 books begged to come home with me.
I could never work in an animal shelter.

The Strand at night.  Drying bathers on the window sill.
Bliss.
A fox crossed my path on the drive home.

Happy Happy New Year

Given our Tet plans in Sydney went awry, I thought I'd start the Year of the Snake at Port Elliot.
I drove there on Friday via Tailem Bend.  A pelican greeted me while I was waiting for the ferry at Wellington.  Got to Port Elliot about 2 pm, lunch at Flying Fish then a lounge on the beach and a toss in the waves.  Perfect.
These photos start on Saturday.  Strangely it had never occurred to me that perhaps I love Port Elliot because it reminds me of St Davids.  More of a Jane Austen church than a cathedral, but a village feel with the sea in walking distance and the quirky signs of a holiday resort.
I stayed at the pub with a view up The Strand towards the sea.
More photos to follow.

Australia Day long weekend

 not long enough, of course.
But spent with some of my favourite people.
Mum bade me a warm welcome.

I visited CKB's new house just up the road from Mum's.

And strolled the beach with my Adorable Nieces.
Young and Free.
